Auxier hangs on, claims 2009 Pro Mod Challenge championship |
LAS VEGAS (November 1, 2009) - Although his final pass of the 2009 Get Screened America Pro Mod Challenge presented by ProCare RX season never got off the ground, Burton Auxier still scored the ultimate prize Sunday when he clinched the season points championship at the NHRA Las Vegas Nationals, the final event of the 2009 Pro Mod Challenge season. Auxier was shut off on the starting line and pushed back before taking the Tree in his quarterfinals race against Dennis Radford. One pair later, though, Auxier's Al-Anabi team was able to celebrate a series championship when second-place Roger Burgess red-lighted against Brad Personett, giving Auxier a mathematical lock on the points title. The event, which ended with Jay Payne winning, finished with Auxier in front of Burgess in the final standings, 662 points to 631. "It was a bad feeling; the car had been perfect to that point," Auxier said of his disappointing second-round exit. "It would have felt a lot better to have made a run and then seen what happened. But it's like it's been all year: we've had some good times and some bad. We ended up winning this thing because the crew has been great all year, and the guys at Reher-Morrison and SpeedTech are the best at what they do." Auxier's season was highlighted by an event win in Bristol, where he beat Raymond Commisso for the title. He also had two runner-up finishes, including a season-opening final-round loss to teammate Mike Castellana in Gainesville, and reached the semifinals in consecutive key races late in the season at Indianapolis and Charlotte. For the year, Auxier suffered no DNQs and had only two first-round losses. "Consistency was a big key for us," Auxier said. "I was always given a consistent car capable of winning on any given day, and I was with a great crew and got some help from some of the smartest people out here. When you're racing with the best in the business, you're supposed to be able to win these things."

Payne powers to second straight win to finish season |
LAS VEGAS (November 1, 2009) - A spectacular season of racing in the Get Screened America Pro Mod Challenge presented by ProCare RX ended Sunday with Jay Payne winning the final event of the 2009 season at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. The event, the 10th of 10 on the 2009 NHRA Pro Mod calendar, put the finishing touches on a record-setting season that saw the all-time Pro Mod record book undergo a complete re-write. Payne ended the season, the ninth year of NHRA Pro Mod competition, with a final-round win over Brad Personett, who red-lighted after a lengthy burn-down. It was Payne's second straight win in the series, coming three weeks after his victory at the super-quick Richmond event. The Pro Mod Challenge's 2009 season championship was also determined at the NHRA Las Vegas Nationals, with Burton Auxier, driving one of the Al-Anabi nitrous-oxide-boosted entries, holding off R2B2 Racing's Roger Burgess for the title. With both drivers losing in successive pairs in the quarterfinals, Auxier was able to make his incoming points lead hold up, eventually finishing with a 662-631 points advantage. With his successive event wins, Payne shot all the way up to third place in the final standings, finishing with 626 points. Payne qualified No. 2 in Las Vegas with a 5.971 best, then opened Sunday's eliminations with a win over Tim Tindle, who red-lighted. He followed up with a 6.08 to 6.04 holeshot win over Chip King in the quarterfinals, and then outran Dennis Radford in the semifinals, 6.04 to 6.14, to set up the final-round showdown against Personett.
