Stivers Lucky 7 in Qualifying and sets Low ET 1st Round
DSB_5432(03-28-09) BAYTOWN, TX - Rick Stivers set the pace for the first round of eliminations in the Get Screened America Pro Mod Challenge at Houston Raceway Park in Baytown, Texas, Saturday afternoon after earning the No. 7 qualifying spot in the lone qualifying session.

Stivers ran a 6.10 Saturday morning to qualify exactly in the middle of the 14-car field, and was matched with former series presenting sponsor Tim Tindle in the first round of eliminations. The Lexington, Ky.-resident's 5.911/236.38-pass was nearly a tenth of a second better than Tindle's 6.00 and was the quickest ET of the round.

"The amazing thing was that I had to click it off early and pull the 'chutes to keep from crossing the centerline at the end of the track, so there was really a lot more left in that pass," Stivers said.

"Brad [Anderson, crew chief and team owner] has an amazing team, and he's put me in a car that I think can set a world record tomorrow," he said.

Stivers 5.911 run can serve as a backup for a time as quick as 5.853 seconds -- a difference of one percent -- in order to count as an official record and earn an additional 20 Get Screened America Pro Mod Challenge championship points. The current, official record is 5.905 seconds, although the quickest, non-official record setting pass was set today here in Houston by Raymond Commisso at 5.884.

"If the weather forecast is accurate, we'll see similar conditions as we had today, and that will set the stage for this Trane to set a world record and hopefully end up in the winner's circle," Stivers said.

Stivers is set to meet teammate Jay Payne in the second round of eliminations, scheduled for Sunday afternoon.
