Stivers Runner-up in Houston's Pro Mod Challenge
DSB_5425(03-30-09) BAYTOWN, TX - Pro Mod driver Rick Stivers reached his first final round since 2007 today in the Get Screened America Pro Mod Challenge presented by ProCare Rx at the O'Reilly NHRA Spring Nationals at Houston Raceway Park, ending the day as runner-up to Danny Rowe by a margin of less than 20 inches.

Stivers qualified lucky No. 7 with in the lone qualifying session Saturday morning with a 6.100 in his Trane-sponsored '06 Stratus, and dispatched Tim Tindle that afternoon in round one with a personal-best 5.911/236.55 - the fifth-quickest ET in Pro Mod Challenge history.

"The weather was just incredible on Saturday, and Brad [Anderson, crew chief and team owner] had this car tuned up and ready to go. It hurt us that we only got one qualifier, but Brad always has a handle on what's going on," Stivers said.

When eliminations continued Sunday, Stivers defeated his teammate Jay Payne and Gainesville winner Mike Castellana to get to the final round where he faced off against Danny Rowe in front of the standing-room-only crowd.

In their battle, Stivers had the better numbers at the stripe, but Rowe took the prize based on starting line reactions: Rowe giving a psychic .015 light to Stivers' stout .069. The holeshot victory went to Rowe - 6.016/244.43 to 5.966/243.68.

"Danny had an incredible light, and he was just meant to win the race today," Stivers said. "We might have had the quickest car in the final, but he definitely won the race, and I give him all the credit he deserves."

With his runner-up finish, Stivers moves to second place in the points after two events, less than one round-win behind Castellana.

"I really think this team is incredible, and I can't thank each of them enough for all of their hard work this weekend. They are truly amazing and professional," he added.

Stivers will take to the track next May 1-3 when the Get Screened America Pro Mod Challenge races at the O'Reilly NRHA Midwest Nationals in Madison, Ill.
